A young woman who has undergone surgery carried out by Kalubowila teaching
Hospital to prevent obesity has died. Shalika Weeraratne Gunasekera, a 28 year
old beautician from Samagipura, Ratnapura has entered hospital on the 10th and
undergone the surgery on the 14th. She had been treated in Intensive Care Unit
for two days and later was warded in a normal ward. She died on the 19th.
When ‘Lankatruth’ inquired regarding the incident the Deputy Director of
Kalubowila Teaching Hospital Dr. Lionel Muhandiram said an investigation is
being carried out to find out whether the deceased was suffering from any
ailment. He said the relevant surgery has been conducted at Kalubowila Teaching
Hospital for four months and already about 50 such operations have been carried
out.
Meanwhile, Mr. S.W. Gunasekera, father of deceased Shalika Gunasekera, has
complained to the police that his daughter died due to negligence of doctors at
Kalubowila Hospital.
